communication challenges with technology
Let's examine in more detail some of the benefits and challenges technology on communication. Technology allows us to communicate:

However, technology has created problems such as:
- Less empathy and social interaction - In Chandra Johnson's article in the Deseret News National, she discusses how families interact less with each other; teens play games online or text friends, and cyber bullying is on the rise. People become numb or detached communicating online and our communication skills, especially interpersonal communication, are rapidly declining.
- Ineffective communication - People get hundreds of emails. Texting, status updates, tweets and instant messaging such brief messages dilutes our communication skills. Multitasking with devices distracts our focus. Speed is replacing accuracy and reflection.
- Inaccuracy -With so many sources and data available, no one verifies to see if information is accurate. It is easy to copy and paste others ideas and claim as your own. There are no second chances when posting online.
- Increased stress and alienation- People have adapted to constantly being engaged and and experience anxiety if separated from their technology. The lines between work, technology, and personal lives continue to blur. With less human interaction and being accessible 24/7, people experience feelings of loneliness and burn-out.
- Lack of privacy and confidentiality -Technology can monitor information we do not want monitored in our personal and professional lives. As technology advances, abilities to obtain confidential information increase. Computer hackers steal private data regularly and cultural norms regarding privacy are changing.
